Quad Screen

Last week I had a Quad Screen done at my OB visit. I was VERY hesitant about doing this test and should have refused it, but my doctor was insistent saying that the hospital didn't have a NICU and they liked to be prepared. There is a VERY high rate of false positives from this test. Most doctor's offices do not require them and only offer if the mother asks about it b/c of the high rate of false positives. Anyway, a Quad Screen measures levels of 4 different hormones. Then they take your age, risk factors, gestational age, and the levels and plug them into the computer for some stats. The nurse called this morning and informed me that our baby has a 1 in 92% chance of having a neural tube defect. We freaked out all morning, but have finally calmed down. We will go for a Level II Ultrasound on Thursday at 1:15, where they will look at all of the baby's organs, but the spine and neck especially.

Not only all of this, but Dave's Papaw is in really bad shape in Wisconsin. They are sending him to hospice care this week. He has been very sick for 2 years, but it is still hard for us. Here he is with one of the dogs that they bring for the nursing home patients to pet.

Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we are feeling especially fragile! We are trusting in the Lord that everything will turn out fine, but it is still a bit scary.

Hi Bethany,
I know how concerned you must be. I'll be praying that everything looks good on the ultrasound Thursday. Will also be praying for Papaw.
Take care,
Emily
